About Cheapscape
Cheapscape compares door-to-door travel cost: every nearby airport, the train, and the drive itself — with parking, rideshare, and gas included. The cheapest airport is often not the closest one; no mainstream flight search prices the ground legs, so nobody can actually see that.
Tell us where you are and where you are going, how much extra time you will tolerate, and we rank real totals — flight fare plus the drive to the airport, parking while you are gone, and the rideshare or rental on the other end.
Where the fares come from
Real-time flight search APIs are gated behind traffic minimums most new sites will never hit on day one, so we built the honesty in from the start instead of pretending otherwise. When a live fare is available, we show it and label exactly how fresh it is — a real price for your exact date, a real price for the metro area rather than that specific airport, or a real price we have on file for a nearby date. When nothing cached exists for a route, we fall back to a fare estimate built from stage length, hub size on each end, low-cost-carrier presence, how far out you're booking, and time of year — and we label it plainly as an estimate, every time. An airport never silently disappears from the comparison just because live data is thin; it shows up with an honest estimate instead.
We will not present a modeled number as a quote, and we will not let a cached "metro-wide" price masquerade as a fare for one specific small airport. Those two rules have shaped more of this codebase than anything else.
How ground cost is modeled
Driving assumptions come from a single, disclosed set of constants: 29 miles per gallon, $3.35 per gallon of gas, a per-mile allowance for tolls and wear, and a road-distance factor over the straight-line distance since real roads are never straight. Airport parking uses a per-airport rate table for major hubs and a flat $16/day estimate elsewhere. Rideshare and rental pricing use typical base fares and per-mile rates rather than a live quote. None of this is a promise of what you will pay — it is a consistent, disclosed model applied the same way to every airport, so the comparison between them is fair even when the exact dollar amount isn't.
Why the ranking can't be bought
Some outbound links earn a commission if you book — that funds the site. Ranking is price and time only; commission never moves a result up the list, and providers that don't pay us anything (Kayak, Google Flights, Expedia, rail) show up right alongside the ones that do.
